A lens

Behavioral alignment

Does realized behavior or a plan fit the relevant target, role, or activity?

Behavioral alignment concerns whether a system’s actual actions fit the relevant activity or larger pattern. It asks whether what the system does in practice is appropriate to the situation, compatible with surrounding activity, and reliably contributes to the outcome in question.

Try seeing it

Look at the action rather than the intention behind it.

An employee can carry out an assigned task correctly without sharing the employer's values. An artificial agent can follow an intended policy under familiar conditions regardless of why that policy was produced.

Behavioral success therefore tells us something important, but less than we may be tempted to infer from it.

Does not establish

The underlying goal

The same behavior can be produced by different intentions, objectives, or motivations.

Does not establish

Concordance

Each component can behave appropriately relative to its own target while the components still interfere with one another.

Does not establish

Robustness

Correct behavior under familiar conditions can disappear after a change in context or distribution.

A question to carry elsewhere

If I only observed this behavior, what would I still not know about the system?
